ToolGPT

Copy the text out of a photo, screenshot or scan

A photo of a printed page, a screenshot of an error message, a scanned PDF with no selectable text — attach it to ToolGPT and ask "what does this say?". The text is recognised in your browser and handed back as a .txt file you can download, paste and edit.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the image or PDF

Add a photo, screenshot or PDF with the + button. For a multi-page document photographed page by page, attach the photos in reading order.

  2. 2

    Ask for the text

Say "extract the text" or "what does this say?". Every page of a PDF is read; up to 20 pages or photos per request.

  3. 3

    Download the .txt

When recognition finishes you get a text file to download, and the assistant can quote the beginning of it in the chat.

What it reads well — and what it doesn't

Text recognition (OCR) is at its best on clear, printed, upright English: documents, receipts, slides, book pages and screenshots at a readable size. It struggles with handwriting, blurry or low-resolution photos, pages photographed at an angle or on a curve, decorative fonts, and tables or multi-column layouts, where the reading order has to be guessed.

ToolGPT is upfront about this. Each job reports how confident the recognition was, and when confidence is low the assistant tells you the text is unreliable instead of presenting it as a clean transcript. It never describes what a page says until the recognised text has actually come back.

Keep the lines, or flow them into paragraphs

By default the text keeps its line breaks as printed, which suits receipts, lists and code. If you want to paste the text into a document, ask for it as paragraphs: lines within each paragraph are joined, with a blank line between paragraphs.

Currently the recognition covers English only. It does not translate, and it does not transcribe words spoken in a video — it reads text you can see on a page or in a picture.

Private by design

The recognition engine (Tesseract) runs inside your browser, so your image or PDF is not sent to an OCR service. One thing to know before you scan a letter, statement, ID or contract: so that the assistant can answer questions about the result, the first 2,000 characters of the recognised text are shared with the AI in your chat, the same way anything you type is. The image itself stays on your device. The first run loads the recognition engine into the page, so it takes a moment longer; later ones in the same session start straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Which languages are supported?

English only at the moment. Text in other languages will come out wrong or empty.

Can it read handwriting?

Not reliably. It is built for printed text; handwritten notes usually come back garbled, and ToolGPT will flag the low confidence.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Recognition runs in your browser with Tesseract; the file stays on your device.

How many pages can it read at once?

Up to 20 pages or photos in one request.
