Convert M4A audio to WAV in a chat

Attach your M4A file and tell ToolGPT you need WAV. It converts the audio in your browser, matches your file's own sample rate and quality as closely as WAV allows unless you ask for others, and hands you the WAV to download.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the M4A

Open ToolGPT and press the + button beside the message box, or drop the audio file into the chat. No account is needed to start.

  2. 2

    Ask for WAV

Type “Convert this to WAV”. Name a bitrate or sample rate if you need a specific one.

  3. 3

    Download the WAV

The converted file appears as a card in the chat with a download button. Your M4A is not changed.

Why convert M4A to WAV?

Transcription tools, audio editors and older programs often want WAV, while phones and Apple apps record M4A. You can ask for a sample rate such as 16 kHz if a speech tool needs one, and the WAV keeps the M4A's sound without another round of compression.

How ToolGPT converts M4A to WAV

The conversion runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, so your audio is not uploaded to a server. MP3 files are written by FFmpeg too, because browsers have no MP3 encoder of their own.

A conversion changes the format and nothing about the sound: the length and volume stay as they are. To trim, speed up or change the volume, ask for that as its own step.

About M4A

M4A is an MPEG-4 file that holds only audio, usually AAC and sometimes Apple Lossless. Apple Music, iTunes and the iPhone's Voice Memos app use it, and it gives good quality at small sizes. Most modern devices play it, but some older players, car stereos and websites accept only MP3.

About WAV

WAV is the standard uncompressed audio format on Windows, created by Microsoft and IBM. It stores sound as plain PCM samples, so it is exact and opens in practically every audio editor. The cost is size: one minute of CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB.

Frequently asked questions

Is my audio uploaded?

No. ToolGPT converts the file in your browser. Only your chat messages go to the AI assistant.

Does converting improve the sound?

No. At best, a conversion keeps the quality your M4A already has, and it cannot bring back detail that was lost before. Converting a compressed file to a lossless format makes it bigger without making it sound better.

Can I convert a whole album at once?

Yes. Attach all the files and ask for WAV. ToolGPT shows one plan for the batch, and each file's bitrate and sample rate are matched to that file unless you name them.
