ToolGPT

Reverse audio so it plays backwards

A backwards vocal for a track, a hidden message for a game, or plain curiosity about how your voice sounds in reverse: attach the audio to ToolGPT and ask it to reverse the file. The reversed copy is made in your browser and is exactly as long as the original.

What it can do

  • Same length, other direction

Every second is kept, in reverse order. Nothing is trimmed or sped up.

  • Common audio files

MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and AAC files can be reversed.

  • Your choice of output

Save the result as M4A, WAV, OGG, Opus or AAC.

  • A length check first

Before any work starts, ToolGPT checks whether the file fits in memory and explains if it is too long.

  • Reversed in your browser

The file is processed on your device, and your original is never modified.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the audio file

Open ToolGPT and add an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or AAC file with the + button. No account is needed.

  2. 2

    Ask to reverse it

Say “reverse this” or “play it backwards”. Name an output format if you need a particular one.

  3. 3

    Download the reversed file

The backwards version appears in the chat with a download button.

Why the limit is length, not file size

To play a sound backwards, ToolGPT has to hold the whole decoded track in memory before it can write the first second of the result. So for this tool, the length of the recording matters more than the size of the file.

The practical limit is about 45 minutes of CD-quality stereo audio, and roughly twice that for mono. If a file is too long, ToolGPT tells you before anything runs, using the file's own numbers. Most songs and voice memos are well within the limit.

Audio files only

This tool reverses sound, not pictures. ToolGPT cannot reverse a video's picture at the moment, and reversing only a video's sound would leave it out of step with the picture.

To reverse the soundtrack of a video, ask ToolGPT to save the audio as its own file first, and then reverse that file. Both steps run in your browser.

The format of the result

A reversed MP3 comes back as an M4A, because no browser has a built-in way to write MP3. If you need an MP3, ask ToolGPT to convert the reversed file afterwards. WAV is a good choice if you plan to edit the result further.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my reversed MP3 an M4A?

The reversing runs in the browser, and browsers cannot write MP3 themselves. A second step with the audio converter turns the result into an MP3.

Can I reverse a video?

Not the picture. You can save the video's sound as an audio file and reverse that.

Does reversing change the length?

No. The result is exactly as long as the original.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. The file is reversed in your browser.
