Trim a video, or cut a section out of it

Attach a video and ask ToolGPT to trim it or to cut a part out. Drag the handles on the range card or type the times, and the new clip is made in your browser.

What it can do

  • Trim or cut

Trim keeps the range you choose and drops both ends. Cut removes the range and joins what is left.

  • Drag the range

The range card has handles you can drag. If you named times, the handles start there.

  • Video and audio

The same card works on audio files such as an MP3 or WAV, which stay audio files.

  • Keeps your format

A MOV stays a MOV. Name MP4, MOV, WEBM or MKV to change it; AVI and FLV come back as MP4 unless you choose another format.

  • Easy corrections

Say “no, end at 0:50” and ToolGPT redoes the job with the new time.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the file

Add a video, or an audio file, with the + button beside the message box.

  2. 2

    Choose the span

Ask to trim or to cut. Drag the handles on the card or say the times, then tap Trim or Cut.

  3. 3

    Download the clip

The result appears as a card with a download button. The original file is left as it was.

Trim and cut are opposites

Trim is for pulling a highlight out of a longer recording: everything before and after your range is dropped. Cut is for removing a mistake from the middle: the range is taken out and the two sides are joined, so the video plays on without that part.

ToolGPT picks the mode from your words. “Keep”, “extract” and “trim” mean trim; “cut out”, “remove” and “delete” mean cut. The button on the card always names the action it will take, so you can check before you tap.

Quality, speed and limits

A range that starts at the very beginning of a video can often be copied without re-encoding, when the output format supports the video's codec. Other ranges, and every cut from the middle, are re-encoded in your browser, with its built-in encoder where possible and with FFmpeg where not. On most clips the difference is hard to see, but HDR video from a recent phone can come out as standard 8-bit video, with colors that look off.

The file has to be longer than one second. AVI and FLV files, which browsers cannot play themselves, are trimmed too. To divide a whole video into several pieces, use the video splitter; to join clips, use the video merger.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trim an audio file?

Yes. Attach an MP3, WAV or another audio file and ask in the same way. The card works the same, and the result is an audio file.

Can I remove two separate parts?

Yes, in two steps. Cut the first part, then ask ToolGPT to cut the second part from that result.

Can I type exact times instead of dragging?

Yes. Write them as minutes and seconds, such as 1:05 to 2:30, and the handles open at those points.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Trimming and cutting run in your browser.
