Convert MP4 to M4A and keep just the sound

Need the soundtrack of a video on its own? Attach the MP4, ask ToolGPT for the audio as M4A, and download a file that plays anywhere audio does. The picture is left out, and the work happens in your browser.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the MP4

Open ToolGPT and press the + button beside the message box, or drop the video into the chat. No account is needed to start.

  2. 2

Ask for the audio as M4A

Type “Save the audio as M4A”. You can name a sample rate too, and a bitrate for compressed formats; anything you leave out follows the video's own audio.

  3. 3

    Download the M4A

The audio file appears as a card in the chat with a download button. The video is not changed.

Why convert MP4 to M4A?

M4A is the audio-only form of MP4, used by Apple Music, iTunes and podcast apps, so it suits a song or talk you want without the picture. MP4 sound is usually AAC already, so the M4A holds the same kind of audio and stays far smaller than a WAV.

How ToolGPT pulls the audio out

The sound is extracted and converted in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, so the video is not uploaded to a server. Only the audio is written to the new file.

A conversion changes the format and nothing about the sound itself: the length and loudness stay as they were. If you only need part of it, ask ToolGPT to trim the audio file afterwards.

About MP4

MP4 is the standard MPEG-4 video container, used by phones, cameras, streaming sites and editing apps. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC sound. Its strength is that it plays almost everywhere; its weakness is that the video is compressed with loss, so each re-encode costs a little quality.

About M4A

M4A is an MPEG-4 file that holds only audio, usually AAC and sometimes Apple Lossless. Apple Music, iTunes and the iPhone's Voice Memos app use it, and it gives good quality at small sizes. Most modern devices play it, but some older players, car stereos and websites accept only MP3.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video uploaded to get its audio?

No. ToolGPT extracts the sound in your browser. Your messages go to the AI assistant, but the MP4 file stays on your device.

Can I choose the audio quality?

Yes. Ask for a sample rate, and for compressed formats a bitrate such as 192 kbps. Settings you leave out match the video's own audio.

Can I keep only part of the sound?

Yes. After the conversion, ask ToolGPT to trim the audio file, for example “keep only 0:30 to 1:45”, and drag the range on the trim card.
