ToolGPT

Compress a PDF by shrinking the images inside it

Photos and scanned pages are what make most PDFs heavy. Attach the file, say “make this PDF smaller”, and ToolGPT shows up to four compression options with estimates worked out from your document. Tap one and the smaller copy is made in your browser.

What it can do

  • Four presets

Recommended, High quality, Small file and Smallest, each with an estimated size and saving.

  • Real text stays sharp

Only images are re-encoded. Text, fonts and vector drawings are copied over unchanged.

  • Oversized images scaled down

Pictures with more pixels than a full page needs at 150 dpi are scaled down; smaller ones keep their size.

  • Optional metadata removal

Small file and Smallest also remove the document's metadata, such as its title and author fields.

  • Never a bigger file

If the result is not smaller than the original, you get an explanation instead of a file.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the PDF

Add the document with the + button or drop it into the chat. No account is needed to start.

  2. 2

    Compare the options

Ask to make it smaller. The cards show the estimated new size and roughly how much smaller each option would be.

  3. 3

    Tap one and download

The compressed PDF appears in the chat with a download button. Your original file is not modified.

How the compression works

ToolGPT does not turn your pages into pictures. It reads the PDF, finds the JPEG images inside it, such as scanned pages and photos, and re-encodes them at a lower quality. Where an image has more pixels than a full page needs at 150 dpi, it is also scaled down. Everything else, including text, fonts and drawings, is copied over exactly, so real text stays sharp at any zoom and can still be selected and searched. In a scanned page, though, the words are part of the picture, so the stronger presets can soften them a little.

The presets trade size against picture quality. High quality changes the photos the least, Recommended is the balance, and Small file and Smallest compress harder and also drop the metadata. You can also ask for a specific image quality from 20 to 100.

When a PDF will not get smaller

Some documents give this tool nothing to work on. A PDF of pure text and vector graphics has no images to re-encode, and ToolGPT tells you so; at most it can remove the metadata. Only JPEG pictures are re-encoded. Lossless images such as screenshots and charts, JPEG 2000, black-and-white fax-style scans and CMYK print images are left as they are.

Encrypted, password-protected PDFs are refused. Every run is also measured afterwards: if the new file is not strictly smaller than the original, you get the numbers and no file.

Your document stays on your device

The whole job runs in your browser, so the PDF is not uploaded to a compression server. That matters for contracts, medical records and ID scans. The smaller copy is a new file with _small added to its name.

Frequently asked questions

Will the text get blurry?

Real text will not: it is copied unchanged, like the vector graphics. In a scanned page the words are part of the picture, so the stronger presets can soften them a little.

Why didn't my PDF get smaller?

Either it has no images ToolGPT can re-encode, or its images are already about as compressed as the option you chose. ToolGPT reports this instead of returning a file that is not smaller.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Compression runs in your browser.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

No. Encrypted PDFs are refused.
