ToolGPT

Video compressor that shows its plan first

Attach a video and say how small it needs to be, or where it is going. ToolGPT proposes the settings, you press Start compression, and the smaller copy is made in your browser.

What it can do

  • A plan you approve

When you name a size or a destination, the plan card lists the target size, resolution, format with its codec, and frame rate. The job starts when you press Start compression.

  • Built from your file

The assistant reads the video's real bitrate and dimensions first, and always aims below the current bitrate.

  • Honest refusals

If the file is already efficiently compressed, ToolGPT explains why instead of handing back a file that is not really smaller.

  • Resolution and frame rate

Lower the resolution or frame rate for bigger savings, or keep them and lower only the bitrate.

  • Your choice of format

MP4, MOV and MKV are compressed to H.264 with AAC sound, and WEBM to VP9 with Opus.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the video

Open ToolGPT and add the file with the + button, or drop it into the chat.

  2. 2

    Say the target

Give a size, a resolution or a destination. ToolGPT replies with a plan card showing the settings it will use.

  3. 3

    Start and download

Press Start compression. When the job finishes, download the smaller file from the result card.

How the target size is worked out

A video's size is roughly its bitrate multiplied by its length, plus the sound. So when you ask for “under 25 MB”, the assistant works out a bitrate that fits your clip's duration, and the plan shows the size that bitrate should produce. Treat it as an estimate: the finished file can land a little above or below it.

Resolution matters in a different way. At the same bitrate a 720p video is about as large as a 1080p one, but a low bitrate looks cleaner at the smaller size. That is why lowering the resolution often helps when the target is small.

When compression will not help

Many phone recordings and downloaded videos are already efficiently compressed. If the plan would not make the file meaningfully smaller, ToolGPT refuses and says why, rather than re-encoding for nothing. It can then suggest what will help, such as a lower resolution or trimming the clip first.

You can combine steps in one request. “Trim the first minute, then compress it for email” becomes a short workflow that you review once.

Where the work happens

Compression runs in your browser, using its built-in video encoder where possible and a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg where not. The time it takes depends on your device and the video's length. A progress bar shows how far along the job is, and you can cancel it.

Frequently asked questions

Will the compressed video keep its format?

Yes, if it is an MP4, MOV, WEBM or MKV. Other formats, such as AVI and FLV, become MP4 unless you name another format.

Can I compress an AVI or FLV file?

Yes. They can be compressed to MP4, MOV or MKV. Making a WEBM from one works only up to 512 MB.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is compressed in your browser. Only your messages and basic file details go to the assistant.
