ToolGPT

Compress a photo to under 1 MB

Phone photos are often several megabytes, and many forms and sites stop at 1 MB. Attach the photo and say “under 1 MB”: ToolGPT finds the highest JPEG quality that fits, without uploading your photo.

How it works

  1. 1

    Attach the photo

Add it with the + button. One photo per size limit.

  2. 2

    Say “under 1 MB”

Add a pixel size if you'd rather keep more quality, such as 3000 px on the long side.

  3. 3

    Download the smaller photo

It keeps your file's name with “-compressed” added, and the original stays on your device unchanged.

Fitting a phone photo into 1 MB

A full-size photo from a modern phone may only fit under 1 MB at a low quality. ToolGPT tries quality 92 first and steps down to 30, and it keeps the first result under the limit. If you'd rather keep more quality, ask for fewer pixels as well: 3,000 pixels on the long side is still sharp on a large screen.

If the photo can't get under 1 MB at the size you chose, ToolGPT says how small it got, so you can pick a smaller size and try again. It never hands you a file over the limit.

Photos from an iPhone

iPhones often save photos as HEIC. ToolGPT can open HEIC only in Safari, which decodes it; in other browsers, save the photo as a JPEG first.

The compressed copy is a JPEG, which opens almost anywhere. It is made in your browser and doesn't carry the photo's location or camera details.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 MB 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?

ToolGPT's file cards count 1 MB as 1,024 KB. If a site counts 1,000 KB, ask for a little less, such as 950 KB.

Can I compress a whole album to 1 MB per photo?

A size limit works on one photo at a time. For many photos, pick one of the compression options instead; each shows the size it will produce.

Will my photo still print well?

At 1 MB a photo looks fine on screens and in small prints. For a large print, keep the original.
